LATC Cancer team sets new fundraising mark

The Los Altos Tennis Club’s 2006 Relay for Life squad, Team Smash Cancer, topped its 2005 fundraising result, taking in one-and-a-half times more for cancer research this year.

This year the Los Altos Relay for Life netted $551,000 for the American Cancer Society. There were 60 teams (one of which was LATC's " Smash Cancer") comprising 2000 participants, 300 in the survivor walk.

The 2006 Relay for Life, held at Los Altos High School running track June 24 and 25, included 70 teams, more than 1,500 walkers and 300 cancer survivors. The 24-hour event raised more than $600,000 for cancer research. LATC’s team, co-captained for the second year by Pat Frischmann and Doris Lehr, raised funds through donations from tennis club members and pledges collected by Relay for Life walkers. Walkers circled the Los Altos High School track at designated hours from 10 a.m. Saturday through 10 a.m. Sunday. Most LATC participants elected to walk Saturday. Jane Turnbull and her husband, Stan, opted for the pre-dawn hours

Smash Cancer was one of only six Relay for Life teams to earn a coveted spot in the event’s food court. LATC volunteers sold $350 worth of cheese and pepperoni pizza slices to hungry Relay participants. Skip’s Pizza on First Street in downtown Los Altos offered the pizza at cost. The $200 profit went to the American Cancer Society. In May, LATC board members Lynne Sweet and Marilyn Shodiss raised an additional $250 by serving drinks and waiting tables at “Team Smash Cancer Night” at Maltby’s restaurant in downtown Los Altos.
