Maltby’s became the place “where everyone knows your name” for a few hours May 3 as tennis players and their friends crowded into the local pub to dine, have fun and raise hundreds of dollars for Los Altos Relay for Life, a cancer fundraiser.
“It was a fun, busy night,” reported LATC board member Marilyn Shodiss, who volunteered to serve drinks for the evening. She and fellow board member Lynne Sweet, who took dinner orders, were decked out in jeans, white shirts, men’s ties and aprons, just like Maltby’s regular wait staff.
Marilyn and Lynne worked for two hours.

Pub owner James Maltby and two waiters, “who were dolls,” Marilyn said, shadowed the two novices, making sure that everyone got the correct drink and food orders.
The patrons were just as forgiving, as Marilyn found out when she tipped over a tray of drinks. “I had five drinks and a bottle of beer with a glass over it on the tray,” she explained. “The tray unbalanced when I served one of the glasses of wine.” Much to her relief, the drinks landed on Marilyn, not on the patrons or their food. “I smelled like Merlot for a while,” she said, “but my clothes cleaned up fine!”
Maltby’s is donating all of the tips Marilyn and Lynne earned that night, plus part of night’s proceeds to Relay for Life.
This is the second year that LATC has sponsored a Relay for Life team. This year’s event is 10 a.m. Saturday, June 24 to Sunday, June 25 at Los Altos High School. Last year LATC’s team, “Smash Cancer,” raised $2,500 for cancer research.
Team Smash Cancer this year won the right to sell pizza at the Relay for Life event.
LATC members can help by:
• collecting pledges or making a donation and walking around the high school track for an hour Saturday or Sunday
• volunteering to help sell pizza at the Team Smash Cancer booth
• donating $10 to light a luminary in honor of someone with cancer
• writing a check to the American Cancer Society
