Coach's Corner Lesson #3

Activating peripheral vision

I left off last month on how to activate peripheral vision on the tennis court. Here is how I do it. Prior to the start of each point, whether serving or receiving, I look to the center of the court and observe both net posts. That seems paradoxical and in fact it is. But try it and see what happens. You might discover that you’ll begin to see the whole court at once which is a bonus.

At the last Open Tennis session (now called Fusion Tennis), I asked the participants to try it and there were a myriad of responses. Some responses were: "I can’t keep it up". Some reported seeing more open court, others said: "I can’t do it". But here’s the deal. Everyone can do it. The problem is not to dwell on it. Just get an impression of the whole court inclusive of your opponent and move to the next primary element (to be discussed later) and already the fusion process is underway.
The trade off is that you are now in an attention mode of broad and general vision instead of narrow and specific vision.
