President's MESSAGE : December 2006

Dear Members,

The SAP Open is coming up and we are inviting all LATC members to join together for group rates for tickets. The Open dates are February 12 to 18 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. The players feature two-time champion ANDY RODDICK, a fan favorite, and America’s #1 JAMES BLAKE, Russia’s two-time Grand Slam winner MARAT SAFIN, our defending champion ANDY MURRAY, and 50 other world-class players! There are great doubles matches too. The world’s hottest tennis in the heart of Silicon Valley. A group is 20 or more which can save $4 - $15 per ticket. Send me an email with your preference on seating and schedule (posted on the LATC website).

Marilyn Taketa, our legal counsel, was very helpful in getting our Corporate status revived with the State. Thank you, Marilyn, for the effort and very explicit instructions in getting us through the “thicket.” We have mailed the required forms and fees and await a response from the State.

Lynn Hunton is now our Singles Ladder Chairman Emeritus after serving since 1988. (He also kept all the newsletters and rosters since the Los Altos Racquet Club incorporation in 1971. Yes, that is our corporate name but we are known as (dba) the Los Altos Tennis Club and will continue to use that name. Lynn asked me to take the Ladder Scores next year, and who can refuse Lynn any request. So I will ask that your Ladder scores be reported to me by email ( )

The emeritus idea caught on at the Board meeting and everyone wanted to be ‘emeritus’!, but we can’t let that happen. We have a fine slate of volunteers and some of the positions are named, and even two Vice Presidents, but not a President. So we anticipate that the Board will elect a member of their choosing, or we will rotate the position at each meeting.

Finally, I congratulate the Board and all members for a fine year of terrific tournaments, social events, as well as play on club ladders and Interclub teams. Our membership increased by about twenty over the year and we are in fine shape to start the next year. Thank you all for being fun to be with and for volunteering to join in the operation of our club.  Please consider re-joining our club this year and don’t forget that it makes a wonderful Christmas present.

See you on the courts,
Tom Gregory
