Our Mothers Day Celebration Tournament on Saturday, May 13, will be mixed doubles and we have invited other clubs to join us to share in the prizes, lunch, snacks, drinks. Frank Smyth will have the usual handicapped scoring system so that all have a chance to win in either of the two flights.
The Los Altos City Council voted on the Rosita Park swimming pool, and decided to have one pool and to destroy the two tennis courts that are now there. This despite our plea after the last meeting in November to not destroy the courts, and to find another location in the Park for the pool(s). Last year the Board provided a letter signed by all Board Members requesting retaining the courts, and reminding the Council that Los Altos has very few public courts. In addition, those we do have are poorly maintained by the City, and yet the courts get lots of play. It is my feeling that tennis courts are the highest use recreational facilities that we have in terms of person use per unit area per day.
The Board resolved to write another letter to the Council, again, to remind them again that there are many tennis players in Los Altos, many more than the approximately 130 represented by the LATC. We are also request your help in reminding the council that we really need more and updated tennis facilities.
The Board meeting had a surprise ending when Marilyn Shodis showed up and flashed several hindered dollars in tips that she had received while an exceptional waitress at Maltby's. She donated her services and the tips to Relay for Life Cancer Drive, and served many of our members who were exceptionally generous. So the LATC is off to a fine start this year in the Relay for Life. We will need additional volunteers to walk in the relay, and to serve in our booth on June 25-26. We already have commitments from Swetka's to sell some of their material there as a donation.
See you at our tournament I hope,
