President's MESSAGE : October 06

Dear Members,

The LATC has been required to submit an application to the Los Altos Recreation Department for the continued reservation of the Marymeade tennis courts for Interclubs on Wednesdays. This affects all our Interclub groups – 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 – approximately 90 players. Even though Interclub play has continued for years at Marymeade and the City-posted Wednesdays reservation sign has been at the courts all along, the application process for continued use has been requested. Further, the Recreation Department is requiring payment for the use of the courts.

Along with the application, a letter was sent to the City Council for approval, the last paragraph stating:

“The LATC, as the only community tennis club in Los Altos, duly requests that the City of Los Altos approve the continued use of the
Marymeade courts for Interclub play, to record such approval with the Recreation Department so that there will be no conflicts of
approved use of the days and times, and to keep the reservation sign posted at the Marymeade courts. Further the LATC duly requests that
the City of Los Altos approve the continued use of the Marymeade courts by the LATC Interclub teams free of charge.”

The Recreation Department has approved the continued use of the Marymeade courts for our Interclubs but has made a motion to the City Council that it deny our request to waive the court reservation fees. The decision by the City Council at its October 10 meeting will be too late for notification in this newsletter, but Beth Watt will keep us informed as to how this payment, and process of payment for Interclub play, will be made should the City Council decide to take the recommendation of the Recreation Department. As a matter of information, other Interclub groups DO pay for use of City courts. Further, other Los Altos-based groups, AYSO, Little League, etc., pay for the use of City-owned property, so it is very likely our Interclub groups will be required to pay for the use of Marymeade.

Our Fall Classic Mixed Doubles Tournament was won by Mirna Irignon and Ray Uribes who won memberships to LATC for 2007. The Board decided this would be the new first prize in our upcoming tournaments. A second place gift certificate to Swetka’s went to Ron Fox and Marilyn Shoddis.  Congratulations! See photos of the tournament in this newsletter and on the LATC website. We had 20 players with a few turned away because we filled our 5 reserved courts.

That said, get your entries in early for the November “Turkey Shoot.”  It is always great fun and we invite other clubs to join us. See the entry details in this issue and on the web.

We are planning on a Ladder for Men’s Doubles and for Mixed Doubles. One way is just to add two more ladders. Another consideration is to have all doubles ladders on one list as follows: the first place ladies would have 1 star after their team on the ladder, the first place men’s doubles team will have 2 stars after their team on the ladder. Likewise the first place mixed team will have 3 stars. This could be real interesting! Note that a single player can be on many of these 3 ladders. Let us know your thoughts.

The LATC needs your participation on the board and on the courts. We are requesting nominees for all the Board positions listed on the cover page of the newsletter.  If you know of someone who can help or hold one of these postitions please let a Board member know so we can get them involved. Board members often switch positions so you will not be displacing any of our fine incumbents. In particular, if you would like to participate please call me or any of the Board members.

See you on the courts!
Tom Gregory
