Dear Members,
The Quad Club Tournament in August was a huge success and generated lots of very good comments by those attending. There were men’s, women’s and mixed doubles matches with lots of new players to get to know and to play with and against – not to mention two days of breakfast, snacks, scrumptous lunches, and trophies besides. Many of our Board think that it was the highlight tournament of the year and we will definitely schedule it again next year. Thanks to Myrna Irignon for getting us started in it, and to Frank Smyth for following up.
We continue to discuss with the City our concern for clean courts and a supportive attitude toward tennis. While we have noted improvement in court conditions (and brooms added on the courts), many of us are dismayed with what appears to be mild concern by the City for our positions on items such as court reservations, court cleaning, and retention of the Rosita/Covington courts. Additionally, the LATC has had a reservation sign (approved, constructed and posted by the City) at the Marymeade courts for free Interclub play on Wednesdays for as long as most of us can remember. The LATC is now being required to apply to the Recreation Department for a new approval for the Wednesdays reservation of Marymeade and pay for the courts in advance. Many of us feel that the City is not as proactive to the LATC as in the past, but we are hoping to resolve the Marymeade court-time issues amicably in order for Interclubs to continue.
Lynn Hunton has dug into LATC archives and noted that we have many photo albums from the past with lots of great pictures but not many names. If any of you long-time members would like to look them over and identify some of members in the pictures, please contact Pat Frischmann at pat@fricomm.com. (Pat is now storing the archives.)
Our Fall Classic Mixed Doubles Tournament, the first of the season, will be held on October 7 at Los Altos High School (see entry form on back page for details). Everyone join in for another great day of tennis. Our Turkey Shoot Mixed Doubles Tournament is also set for November 18, so mark the date on your calendar now. Check out this newsletter and our website for pictures of earlier tournaments to see the great fun had by all who participated.
The LATC needs your participation to keep us a vibrant organization and on the courts. We are requesting nominees for all the Board positions listed on the cover page of this newsletter. If you or you know of someone who can help or hold one of these postitions, please let a Board member know so we can get all involved. Board members often switch positions so you will not be displacing any of our fine incumbents. Most importantly, if you would like to participate please contact me or any of the Board members.
See you on the courts! Tom Gregory |
