| Los Altos is in the midst of planning for a new community center, possibly moving the community pool to that site, and redesigning facilities at Rosita Park. If LATC members want to have their say about preserving and adding to the Rosita tennis courts, they can write to the city manager, Doug Schmitz, Doug.Schmitz@ci.los-altos.ca.us. |

To the Los Altos Parks and Recreation Commission: I am unable to attend tonight's meeting and would like to have on the record my comments on Agenda Item 2, the conceptual plans for the Rosita Park site. I am a member of the board of directors of the 140-member Los Altos Tennis club, and a near neighbor of Rosita Park. Los Altos Tennis Club urges the planners to keep the tennis courts at the Rosita Park site and increase their number -- from the current two to three or four. Los Altos has relatively few public tennis courts compared with neighboring Cupertino, Mountain View, and Palo Alto Our city has just nine courts are available to the public: two at Rosita, two at Mackenzie Park, three at Marymeade Park and two at Montclaire School. These courts are not available at all times. Often, they are reserved by outside tennis contractors for lessons. Compare this with neighboring towns. Cupertino has double the population of Los Altos, but 2.5 times more public courts: 22. Mountain View, with two-thirds more people, has quadruple the number of public courts: 35 to our nine. None of these figures include courts on school property. True, Los Altos High School has eight open tennis courts (four more are kept permanently locked) but those eight are available to the public only when not in use by high school gym classes, sports teams, recreation department-sponsored and private lessons. Keep the tennis courts at Rosita Park, and add more if you can. Pat Frischmann, board member, Los Altos Tennis Club |
