LATC Members Rally to Save Los Altos Rosita Park Courts

First, to everyone who wrote letters and emails to the city council, thank you. City officials are now very aware that there is a vocal tennis community in Los Altos that is very concerned about court conditions and availability.

At yesterday’s council meeting study session, the architects hired to develop a master plan for the civic center reported on the results of their needs assessment. One of the conclusions was NOT to put tennis courts at the community center, but instead to recommend that the city improve and maintain the town’s nine current courts at Rosita, Mackenzie, Montclaire and Marymeade parks.

Of the six people who spoke during the public comment portion, four were from Los Altos Tennis Club: Jack Bates, Bill Powell, Mary Skougaard and myself. We addressed the lack of courts in Los Altos vs. neighboring towns (4000 per court for Los Altos, 2000 per court for Mountain View, 1900 for Palo Alto, and 3900 for Sunnyvale); the benefits of the sport of tennis for people of all ages; and the urgent need for better court maintenance.

The action now moves to the Parks, Recreation and Planning Commission, which is working with the architects to develop two plans for Rosita Park; one featuring the pool the council approved last year, and one without a pool, in case the proposed swimming complex is relocated to the civic center.

Parks commission chairman Karen Greguras has promised to alert Los Altos Tennis Club when the architects present their plans for Rosita Park.
