On March 14, enthusiastic Los Altos Tennis Club members and guests met at Los Altos High School tennis courts to enjoy some tennis, battle for “Economic Stimulus” cash prizes, and enjoy some delicious al fresco cuisine.

Format was 4-person team tennis with each team playing 2 mixed doubles and a men’s and women’s doubles match – a match consisted of a “pro set” – 8 no-ad games and an mandatory tiebreaker plus handicap points for players of unequal rankings.

The “Warren Buffet” team – Patsy Duke, Debbie Ryan, Thomas Rossing and Captain, Bill Watt racked up 38 points to take top honors and win cash awards.

The “J Pierpont Morgan” team – Captained by Marijke Vallaeys with Jo Darius, Satish Rishi and Bob White came in 2nd with 34 points and also won cash awards.

The “Tycoons” – Patty Chichi, Maureen Rishi, John Douqet and Bill Powell with 34 points came in 3rd and won stuffed animals.

The “John D. Rockefeller” team – Captained by France Rode with Sherry Barba, Doreta Strotman, and Polly Neuman came in next with 28 points and won cowboy hats.

The “Googles”, led by Beth Watt, including Mary Ann Weingartner, Ray Uribes and Bob Ruff
won 26 points and won cowboy hats.

The “Bill Gates” team captained by Doris Lehr including Virginia Sorenson, Lynn Hunton, and Peter Barba won 23 points and won tennis balls.

Social Chairman Patty Chichi provided an al fresco feast of fresh fruits and vegetables, homemade banana bread, and gourmet sandwiches, which was eagerly devoured by the participants.

Lynn Hunton graciously provided his outstanding mobile sanitary facility.

In the spirit of the Tennis Club, everyone pitched in to set up and disassemble the picnic facilities.

Was the club successful in stimulating economic activity? Note that the Dow is up over 1000 points and over 10 home sales have closed in Los Altos since the tournament! Cause and effect? Who knows?
