Friday night was disturbed by lightning, thunder and some rain – It looked as if the event might be defeated by the elements! But at the last minute the skies cleared and the action was on!

The group used 6 courts at Los Altos High – They broke into 4 teams:
Team Federer – Captained by Bill Moniz and Mary Ann Weingartner including Doris Lehr, Betty Lam, Lynn Hunton and Bill Powell.

Team Nadal – Captained by Tom Gregory and Patty Chichi including France Rode, Joyce Johnson, and Pat Pejack.

Team Venus – Captained by Ray Salazar and Sherry Barba including Peter Barba, Helen and Bill Helson and Tom Rossing.

Team Serena – Captained by Larry Squires and Judy Gentry including Bob Pearl, Marilyn Shodiss, Carol Gielow and Virginia Sorensen.

The teams played pro sets (8 no-ad games and a mandatory tiebreaker) with teams set by the captains. Lots of close games and near misses! Lots of delectable snacks and drinks were enjoyed at the breaks.

Team Serena won the most games (37) followed by Team Nadal with 29, Team Federer with 23 and Team Venus with 17.

At the conclusion of the games, the scene shifted to Lynn and Martha Hunton’s home. Patty had prepared delicious salads and appetizers and cake and ice cream. Bill Powell served as the BBQ cook and produced seared filet mignon, BBQ’ed chicken, sirloin patties, and veggie burgers. Flowers and candy were presented to Lynn and Martha in honor of their great hospitality. Prizes of crystal items, tool kits, and stuffed animals were selected by the teams in order of their finish.

Thanks to all who helped with the tournament and BBQ! As usual, Club members jumped in to help as needed. Particular thanks to Patty who skipped part of a family get-together to provide the good food, Tom Gregory who helped to organize and cleanup the BBQ and MaryAnn who stayed late and helped organize the cleanup!
