The LATC’s November 17 Turkey Shoot Tournament was full of exciting tennis, new faces, and good food and drinks.
Initially announced as a men’s and women’s doubles tournament, an appreciable number entered as mixed doubles teams. I was compelled to make up a draw to accommodate the entries and all went well for all draws as we had men’s, women’s and mixed doubles. The women by far contributed to the overall success of this tournament since thirty of the forty entrants were women.
The men’s doubles draw was the smallest with 4 teams but it worked well for the format of 3 matches of no ad scoring. Tom Gregory, pairing with his son Ken Gregory, won all of their 3 matches and took the top prize, a gift certificate for their Thanksgiving Day turkey.
In the women’s division there were 10 teams closely competing for the top prize. Three teams finished as runners’ up. But the top prize went to a team of very competitive ladies who lost only 3 games out of a possible 27 and that was Motoko Yagi and her friend visiting from Japan, Atsuko Suzuki. The 3 teams with 19 games were Duc Wong and Thu Stankunas, April Abreau and Nakamatsu, and Barabra Halk and Sophie Fegan.
In the mixed doubles division consisting of 6 teams a formidable duo of Jon Saxe and Myrna Marshall won the top prize with a total of 16 games.
Setting up the tournament and taking down went smoothly with board members helping out. Mary Ann Weingartner orchestrated a very nice lunch with the help of Doris Lehr, Bill Powell, and Frank Smyth. Lynn Hunton as usual provided the convenience wagon. Club president Beth Watts provided her usual expertise in coordinating all miscellaneous components to ensure a most enjoyable event was provided to all participants.
As everyone left a big Thank You went out.
